So,  I really, really, really love Homestuck. (Which, if you have never heard of it, is a currently-running webcomic by Andrew Hussie, hosted at mspaintadventures.com. Go! The first page is the first panel! Enjoy!) It has brought hours of joy to my life. As I recently told [personal profile] cest_what , “People only wish the things they invested their time in were this cool.”

Yes. It is that cool. I know. You are already convinced.

The thing is, Homestuck, in addition to being really, really great, is notoriously difficult to describe. There are too many great things about it! Too many characters! Too many plot twists! Too many motherfucking universes. I tried to write about five different versions of a fandom safari for slashreport, but I failed out each time, because I couldn’t get it to fit to vaguely one minute. Perhaps someone stronger than myself will manage it. I decided, really, what I wanted was slashreport to let me give a short but engaging lecture-discussion on Homestuck, but that’s never going to happen (thank god). It did mean I spent a lot of braintime trying to figure out how to explain it.

This primer is partly the result of that. The other part is that I think you should read the goddamn comic because it is motherfucking excellent and you won’t regret it.

I’m going to break up this persuasion/primer/post of doom into six different reasons to read Homestuck, and each of them will be a different post. I do this because a. I like lists, and b. it serves for shorter, actually readable posts. Get ready. It is also at AO3, if you'd prefer to read it there.

  1. The Plot
  2. The Format
  3. The Characters
  4. The Laughs
  5. The Art
  6. The Fandom

The Plot

Okay, so first things first: everything I am about to tell you is a spoiler. Everything. Part of Homestuck’s charm, its ability to enthrall, is that everything is constructed as a reveal, from characters’ names to their species. (More on that in Part the Second.) If you’re a major spoiler-phobe—as in you do not watch the trailers for movies—leave now and go read the goddamn comic.

If you’re like me, and spoilers help you get interested, grab a chair. I’m not going to summarize the comic. That would take all day, and also, be stupid. What I do want to talk about is why I find the plot of Homestuck so. fucking. exciting. And I’m going to use a list. Yeah, bitches.  At AO3, if you'd rather.

1. Genre )

2. Bildungsroman, or Growing Up and Finding Your Place in the Universe (Literally) )

3. Intelligent Storytelling, or Don’t Worry, Hussie Handles Plot Like a Fucking Pro )
